Latino Arts, Inc. and the Latino Arts Strings Program (LASP) is pleased to offer a selection of summer workshop offerings for the broader community. Workshops are available for every age and skill level.

Latin American Guitar For Adults:

Mondays/Wednesdays, 5 - 7 p.m., June 18 - July 20 (No class July 2 & 4)

  • In this guitar class, students will have the opportunity to develop basic guitar technique – chords and strumming – through the use of Latin-American music. Students will learn various rhythms such as: cumbia, ranchera, bolero, trova and others. We will also review basic music theory and foundational information about the guitar.


Manouche Guitar Workshop:

June 25 - 29, 1- 5 p.m., Concert: Friday, 6/29, 1 - 5 p.m.

  • This workshop will focus primarily on the technical and conceptual demands of the manouche or ‘gypsy swing’ genre. Intermediate players will learn the basic rhythm guitar patterns, right hand picking techniques for lead playing, commonly used chords, and the stylistic and motivic patterns. The workshop will culminate in a group-wide ‘jam’ of the famous Django Reinhardt tune “Minor Swing,” a simple and effective way to get those who are new to the style involved quickly. *The jam will be open to the public. *


Mariachi For Young String Players:

Tuesdays/Thursdays, 5 - 7 p.m., June 18 - July 20

  • The instructors of the national award winning Latino Arts Strings Program and Mariachi Juvenil will run a week long workshop for youth interested in learning Mariachi and other Latin American genres of music. This intensive course will provide students with a full learning and performing experience. Students will work to learn several pieces of mariachi repertoire and will give a performance joined by the Latino Arts Mariachi Juvenil at the end of the week.


Magical Frida: Exploring Surrealism Through Still Life Painting:

*Adult Session: July 23 - 25, 9:00 - 11:30 a.m. | *Family Session: August 6 - 8, 9:00 - 11:30 a.m.

  • Using still life paintings by Mexican surrealist Frida Kahlo as inspiration, participants will explore surrealism and create their own surrealist still life inspired by the life, color pallet, and works of Kahlo. This hands on class touches on basic drawing skills, color theory, and composition. Participants will take home their own surrealist still life at the end of the class.
